On the tee

  • A nine-hole round takes roughly half the time of eighteen and suits summer mornings and short evenings.
  • One city-owned course near Orlando is a walking nine of about 2,480 yards that crosses the street six times.
  • Evening options include public night golf in the cooler months and ranges open until 8 or 9 PM.

Golf trips tend to be planned around eighteen-hole rounds, but some of the most enjoyable golf around Orlando comes in smaller pieces. A nine-hole course can fit into a morning before the heat, a short course is a friendly place for beginners and children, and an evening at a well-lit range can be a round in itself. This guide looks at the shorter formats and when they make sense.

Why play nine?

  • Time. A nine-hole round takes roughly half as long as eighteen, which leaves the rest of the day for family, work or the parks.
  • Heat. In summer, NOAA’s normal highs in Orlando are above 90°F. Nine holes at first light lets you finish before the hottest part of the day.
  • Weather. Afternoon thunderstorms are common from June to September. A shorter round is easier to fit into a dry window.
  • Learning. For new golfers, nine holes is long enough to practice every kind of shot without becoming a test of stamina.
  • Walking. A nine-hole walk is manageable for most players, even in warm weather.

What short golf looks like around Orlando

The Courses has a filter for nine-hole and short courses. Two very different examples show the range.

A walking nine in the middle of town

One of the oldest courses in the area is a city-owned nine-hole course in Winter Park, built in 1914 and renovated in 2016. The city describes it as a walking course of about 2,480 yards and par 35. Most players take a pull cart, and a few electric carts are kept for senior and disabled players. The round crosses city streets six times, past oaks, churches and a cemetery, and road traffic and the occasional train are part of the experience. The public can reserve starting times up to three days ahead.

A short course at a large golf complex

At the other end of the scale, a large golf center west of Orlando pairs two championship courses with a nine-hole short course. Short courses like this are useful for warming up, for families and for anyone who wants to work on approach shots and putting without committing to a full championship round.

Evening golf

Summer evenings are long but still hot, and winter evenings are pleasant but get dark early. Two options around Orlando make the most of them:

  • Night golf. The city-run nine in Winter Park hosts public night golf on Tuesday nights from November through March, and rents the course for private night golf events. Glow equipment makes the ball and the holes visible after dark.
  • Late ranges. A city-owned course in Orlando opened a covered driving range in October 2025 with technology-equipped bays, open until 8 or 9 PM depending on the day. A covered bay is a comfortable way to practice on a humid evening.

Tip: For evening sessions in summer, remember that storms often build in the afternoon. Check the radar before you leave, and read Lightning on the Golf Course: What to Do When Thunder Rolls in Orlando so you know when to head inside.

Is a short course easier?

Not necessarily. Shorter holes take the driver out of your hands more often, but they reward accurate iron play and a good short game. Older courses were often built with small greens and tight lines, and a short par 3 over a bunker can be as hard as any long hole. Treat a short course as a different test rather than an easy one.

Etiquette on a busy nine

Nine-hole courses near town centers can be busy, especially early and late in the day. Keep up with the group ahead, be ready to play when it is your turn and let faster groups through if you are holding them up. On a course that crosses public streets, watch for traffic and follow any crossing signs. Planning your short round

Check the course website or call the golf shop for current tee times, rates and any restrictions, such as special events or maintenance days. The city-run nine in Winter Park, for example, says it is open every day except Christmas and a few maintenance days. A short round may be the easiest golf you book all trip, and for many visitors it becomes the one they remember.
